Livens, Horace Mann 1862-1936

Best known for having painted the earliest recorded portrait of Van Gough. Livens became friends with Van Gough whilst studying at the Academy at Antwerp in 1885/86. Livens returned to England where he was a founder associate of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers. Livens work is little known now due to the fact that many of his works were destroyed in the Blitz and a further group destroyed in a fire at his widows house in 1957.
