Hakon Thorsen is known for a series of meticulously executed portraits, landscapes, interiors, and genre paintings, done in the true academic style of naturalism.

He was very influenced by Vermehren early on in his career as an artist. In his later years, he focused mostly on his teaching, and made very few other paintings.

Today Thorsen’s paintings adorn the halls of many European and Scandinavian cathedrals, museums, and castles.
