A collector stands before two desperate farmers pleading for him to reconsider the notice of eviction. Dressed in tattered, worn and humble attire with their aprons and wooden shoes, the old farmers look insignificant compared to the collector dressed in a nicely pressed blue suit, shined shoes and top hat. The old man supports himself with a walking stick as he holds a wood-planked door open. He wears a thick wool sweater and leather apron. The collector points his smoking pipe at the evicted couple while he holds his ledger under his left arm. The farmer’s neighbor and her chickens watch the pathetic scene.

The old couple shares a thatched roof house with another woman. The walls are white-washed mud and stucco with wooden support beams sticking out above the wood-planked shutters. They stand on a stony walkway bordering a wooden post fence. Green fallen leaves are scattered on the brown foreground while lush trees fill the right of the composition. Another thatched house can be seen in the background. The collector’s blue suit strongly contrasts against the rich brown and green palette of the composition.
