Washing Clothes at the Well

Oil on Canvas: 16" x 22"
Catalog# PETED-006

This typical Italian scene of the late 1800’s shows women from the local village gathered round a well in a courtyard to do their washing. The light is a golden yellow saturating the sun-stained stone making up the structure of the quiet courtyard. The five launderers are shaded by the thick, green brush growing above the wall. A man and his donkey wait at a distance for either a load of laundry or for some water from the well. The mood is light, yet quiet as the women work to finish their chore.

Having studied in Italy particularly in Subiaco, Petersen came across what is now known as one of his favorite motives noticing the distinctive beauty of this mundane task from what he had seen back home. Traveling to the smaller villages around Italy, Petersen focused on his favorite scenes of everyday life. The palette is simple and subdued by yellows, greens and browns, making for a tranquil view of a tedious task.
