Late 1800's

A late afternoon sun peaks through a collection of clouds in the center of the composition above an arched stone bridge. Sailboats, rowboats and gondolas fill the canal of this Venetian village. Gondola posts protrude from the water and create an observation line leading to the bridge and descending sun. Figures are scattered throughout the composition on the boats, bridge and along the sidewalk. The village is constructed of golden stone and brick. The linearity of the boat masts, canal and vertical building create subtle, but strong contrasts of lines in an otherwise subdued composition. White fishing lines and blue cloth-like material are strewn on the right of the bridge - these and other sporadic additions offer optical interruptions for the viewer’s observational experience.
